LDD/LOTD: Filigrana Momposina, Colombia: Un Tesoro Nacional

One of the great treasures of artistry in Colombia is found in the craft of handmade filigree jewelry, or filigrana, an ornamental work of fine (typically gold or silver) wire formed into delicate tracery.*

I am excited to show you a few pieces that I have from the region and share with you the history and workmanship of this extraordinary and exquisite craft. View the gallery below to see my personal collection!

You will also find intricate embroidery of crosses, rosaries and other representations that each master craftsman is inspired by, which is unique and never replicated. Every aspect of the work is done by hand. The artisans take great pride in working with threads that can be as thin as a strand of hair.
Below is a short video demonstrating the techniques used in the workshop in Mompox*. You can even hear the birds chirping in the background!
